About the ARTIST

If you live in or visit Santa Fe, you’ve seen James Mahan AKA MAYHEM creating his pen and ink visions in the cafes and bars or on the streets. His career has ranged from abstract art, computer graphics, photography, music, and underground comics. His work has appeared in galleries, numerous national and international publications, and is in many private collections. The current portfolio of digital prints seeks to combine all these elements.

James Mahan was born in Boston in 1958. At an early age, he discovered 2 influential things: cartoons and the pencil. He's been at it ever since. After a high school career filled with art classes and other (ahem) explorations, he attended the Massachusetts College of Art where he majored in Sculpture and Punk Rock Bands. He moved to the bay area in the 90s where he bacame involved in computer graphics as director of the Computer Arts Institute, a computer graphics training facility. As an artist, James Mahan has been balancing the traditional and the digital for over 12 years. He's put the art into computers while maintaining a separate career as a painter and illustrator.

Living in North Beach (home of the beats), he rediscovered traditional mediaand proceeded to create a body of work which continues to this day. Currently living in Santa Fe, James Mahan creates his ink filled creations in a small hotel room.
